Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) on Thursday commenced commercial production at the fourth plant of its Hansalpur manufacturing facility in Gujarat, increasing its total annual production capacity to 2.9 million units.

The new plant, built with an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units, increases the Hansalpur facility’s overall production capacity to 10 lakh units per annum from 7.5 lakh units earlier.

The facility has become Suzuki Motor Corporation’s first manufacturing site globally to achieve an annual production capacity of one million vehicles and is now India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturing facility at a single location.

The company has invested a cumulative ₹25,288.7 crore in the Hansalpur facility, including an estimated ₹3,900 crore for the fourth plant. The new production line will initially manufacture Maruti Suzuki’s flagship battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA.

With the latest expansion, Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing capacity now stands at 10 lakh units at Hansalpur, 9 lakh units at Manesar, and 5 lakh units each at its Gurugram and Kharkhoda plants.

Gujarat to drive future growth

Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the expansion would strengthen the company’s ability to cater to rising domestic and export demand while reinforcing its manufacturing footprint. “The new line will further strengthen our ability to meet the growing demand from customers in India and overseas while advancing our ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ vision,” he said.

Takeuchi added that the Hansalpur facility, together with the upcoming Sanand plant in Gujarat, will play a key role in helping Maruti Suzuki achieve its long-term target of producing 4 million vehicles annually in India.

The Hansalpur plant currently manufactures the Baleno, Fronx, Swift and e VITARA. It also serves as the company’s largest export hub, accounting for nearly 47 per cent of its overseas shipments in FY26.

Maruti Suzuki said it has also strengthened green logistics at the facility through India’s first in-plant automobile railway siding under the PM GatiShakti programme. Since March 2023, the company has dispatched more than 7.5 lakh vehicles by rail from Hansalpur.

In February 2026, the project became the world’s first modal shift transportation initiative to be registered under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme.
