Some social media users claim witnesses spotted the gunman on the roof and that the person was “dressed in all black”.
Multiple media reports quoted authorities and said Kirk was shot from an estimated distance of around 200 yards.
AFP quoted investigators and stated they believed the single bullet had come from a campus rooftop, fired by someone dressed in black, in what appeared to be a targeted killing.
However, investigators have not verified whether the person seen on the rooftop is linked to the attack.
The shooter remains at large.
Kirk was hit while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.
Video from the scene showed him addressing a large crowd when the sound of a single shot rang out. Kirk appeared to collapse in his chair before the camera swiftly moved, and sounds of panic erupted in the audience.
FBI Director Kash Patel said one person was being held.
