A new underwater habitat has taken its place on the seabed off the Florida Keys, offering scientists something they have not had in US waters for decades: a permanent place to live and work beneath the ocean for days at a time. Ocean infrastructure company DEEP has installed its Vanguard pilot habitat at Tennessee Reef inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Positioned 17 metres (56 feet) below the surface, the structure is entering its final commissioning phase before hosting its first research crews. Those physiological changes allow researchers to understand how healthy people respond to unusual environmental stress before applying those findings to medicine on land.

The work planned for Vanguard extends well beyond studying divers themselves. The habitat will support coral restoration projects, continuous reef monitoring, climate impact assessments, species surveys, ocean sensor testing and astronaut training. Scientists also expect to use the platform for educational broadcasts, allowing audiences to communicate live with crews working on the seabed.Human health research forms another part of that programme. Lessons from prolonged underwater missions could improve understanding of oxygen therapy, cardiovascular responses, immune function, sleep, nutrition, thermal regulation and continuous patient monitoring.
