Sometimes the most dangerous discoveries hide in plain sight. In central China, a 90-year-old woman spent nearly two decades using what she believed was an ordinary piece of scrap metal as a household hammer. The heavy object cracked walnuts, crushed red peppers and drove nails into wood without ever causing concern. It had been picked up from farmland and seemed sturdy enough for everyday chores. Only when demolition workers visited her home in 2024 did the truth emerge. The metal tool was not a hammer at all but a live military hand grenade that had somehow remained unexploded despite years of repeated impacts. The discovery left even bomb disposal experts astonished.

How the shocking discovery ended 20 years of unknowingly using a live grenade

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman, identified only by her surname Qin, discovered the object more than 20 years ago while working on farmland in Huangbao County, Hubei province, central China. The metal item appeared heavy, solid and conveniently shaped for use as a hammer.Without suspecting anything unusual, Qin took it home and added it to her kitchen tools. Over the years, she routinely used it to crack walnuts, crush dried red peppers, pound ingredients and hammer nails around the house. The object remained in daily use for over two decades. Despite countless blows against hard surfaces, nothing happened because the grenade’s safety mechanism was never disturbed.

How did she realise it was actually a live Type 67 grenade

However, it took until June 2024, when people came to destroy Qin’s old house, before the truth came to light. One of the people who was destroying the building observed the metallic item and instantly got the impression that it was military hardware instead of some household device. Contacting the authorities and conducting tests, specialists concluded that the metallic item was an active Chinese Type 67 hand grenade. The Type 67 hand grenade was developed by China at the end of the 1960s and has been used by its armed forces ever since. Designed as a fragmentation grenade, it contains an explosive charge surrounded by a metal casing intended to break into deadly fragments upon detonation after the safety pin and fuse are activated.Bomb disposal specialists safely removed the grenade and later destroyed it in a controlled operation.

Why did the grenade never explode despite years of use

The discovery immediately prompted a question: How was it possible to strike an active grenade for many years without causing any explosion? The explanation of this phenomenon can be found in the structure of the grenade. In modern hand grenades, such as the Type 67 grenade, several safety mechanisms exist which guarantee that no accidental explosion can take place while handling the grenade.Because Qin never tampered with the fuse or safety assembly, the explosive charge remained dormant even though the metal body endured repeated impacts. However, experts stress that this should not be seen as evidence that unexploded military ordnance is safe to handle. Age, corrosion, manufacturing defects or damage can make old explosives highly unstable. In many cases, unexploded grenades, shells and bombs have detonated unexpectedly after being moved or struck.

She had “used it to hammer things every day” and had never imagined this

After learning that she had unknowingly spent about 20 years using a live grenade as a household hammer, Qin reportedly remained remarkably composed.According to the South China Morning Post, the elderly woman simply remarked that she had “used it to hammer things every day” and had never imagined it could be dangerous. The incident quickly gained prominence on Chinese social media platforms, with many people finding it incredible that the live grenade could survive years in a kitchen without blowing up. It was also mentioned that the discovery of unexploded military ammunition that had been used in previous wars could at times be made in rural places. Go to Source
