US-Iran War Live Updates: Indian seafarer missing after attack off Oman coast confirmed dead

US Iran War News: The conflict between the United States and Iran entered another dangerous phase on Wednesday as military strikes, attacks on commercial shipping and diplomatic tensions continued to mount across the Gulf, further undermining hopes of salvaging the fragile interim peace agreement signed last month.

The latest escalation follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon his controversial proposal to charge commercial vessels a 20% reimbursement fee for transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said Gulf leaders had instead offered to invest billions of dollars in the United States, prompting him to withdraw the toll plan. However, Washington is moving ahead with the reimposition of a maritime blockade targeting Iranian ports, a move expected to take effect later on Wednesday.

Despite Trump’s reversal on shipping fees, the security situation in the Gulf has continued to deteriorate. The US military carried out another round of strikes targeting Iran’s coastal defence systems, missile and drone infrastructure, and maritime capabilities, saying the attacks are intended to reduce Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and regional security. Iran has responded by targeting vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, as well as launching attacks against US allies including Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.

The latest exchanges have once again placed the Strait of Hormuz—the world’s most important energy chokepoint—at the centre of the crisis. Before the conflict erupted, around one-fifth of globally traded crude oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the narrow waterway every day. Tehran insists it has the right to regulate traffic through the strait, while Washington maintains that international shipping must remain free from interference.

Commercial shipping has become increasingly risky, with several vessels coming under attack in recent days. Two UAE-linked tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles, leaving Indian crew members among the casualties, while other commercial ships reported projectile strikes near Oman. Aviation authorities have also warned airlines against operating over parts of the Gulf region amid fears that the conflict could spread further.

The collapse of the interim ceasefire has also renewed concerns about the global economy. Oil prices have risen sharply amid fears of prolonged disruption to energy supplies, although prices eased slightly after Trump withdrew his shipping fee proposal. Investors remain focused on the security of maritime trade routes as military operations continue on both sides.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan, Oman and Qatar continue behind the scenes in an attempt to prevent the conflict from spiralling into a wider regional war. Negotiators are seeking to revive discussions over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme and broader security arrangements, though repeated military exchanges have cast serious doubt over the prospects for a lasting agreement.
