Sir Sam Neill

Quote of the day by Sam Neill: ‘You are unique. There is only one you. Except that there is no better, and there is no worse,’ a life-defining lesson by the late ‘Jurassic Park’ star on the importance of individuality and accepting yourself

This quote is an excerpt he wrote in his memoir, ‘Did I Ever Tell You This?’ , which was published in March 2023. He had written the memoir after he received his cancer diagnosis. Neill was formerly diagnosed with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent extensive chemotherapy to target and cure the disease. During his time receiving treatment, the actor started working on the stories that are included in his memoir as a way to keep his spirits up.The veteran actor emphasised the importance of your existence as an individual. He shared the thought that there is only one ‘you’ in the entire universe, and that this is something to appreciate, celebrate, and fully accept. He shared that every individual is unique and different in their own way, which is something to appreciate and adore. There are a lot of things and factors that count in and make you who you are. Your good parts, your bad parts, and all the grey areas in between are distinctive to you and only you. He shares that we all have flaws, regrets, limitations, along with good days and dark days. However, instead of fighting your own existence or pretending they just do not exist, you accept them for what they are, a blueprint of your existence and qualities that set you apart from everyone around you.All in all, Neill wanted to express that rather than trying to change who you are, what you are, it is best to accept all parts of yourself and be true to yourself in all aspects of life.
