Most luxury yachts are designed by renowned naval architects. This one began as a personal vision. A private owner conceived and engineered a floating home unlike almost anything on the market, then partnered with Louisiana-based shipbuilder Breaux Brothers to bring it to life. The result is the GLV-120 Shine Down, a 120-foot aluminium floating mansion listed for $15 million. Featuring a swimming pool, five king suites, four residential decks and a rooftop almost entirely covered in solar panels, the vessel is designed to generate much of its own electricity while offering the comforts of a luxury waterfront home that can travel under its own power.

Inside the $15 million solar-powered floating mansion

Unlike a traditional yacht, the GLV-120 Shine Down is designed primarily as a luxury floating residence. Measuring 120 feet (36.6 metres) long with a beam of about 38 feet, it offers more than 6,400 square feet of interior living space spread across four decks. The vessel includes five king-size suites, spacious lounges, gourmet kitchens, office areas, multiple entertainment spaces and floor-to-ceiling glass that provides panoramic water views. Outside, residents can enjoy a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, smokehouse and expansive rooftop deck. One of the vessel’s defining features is its solar-powered energy system. Nearly the entire rooftop is fitted with 108 solar panels, which charge a large lithium iron phosphate battery bank capable of storing more than 300 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The system is designed to reduce dependence on shore power by supplying much of the vessel’s daily electrical needs. While it can operate for extended periods without plugging into the grid under suitable conditions, its actual performance depends on weather, energy consumption and operational requirements.

Designed by the owner and built by commercial shipbuilders

The floating mansion was conceived and engineered by its owner, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed. Rather than hiring a conventional yacht design studio, the owner developed the concept before taking it to Breaux Brothers, a Louisiana shipyard known for building commercial aluminium vessels.Founded in 1982 in Loreauville, Louisiana, Breaux Brothers has spent decades constructing crew boats, pilot boats, patrol vessels and offshore support craft. The GLV-120 represents one of the company’s most ambitious luxury residential projects to date.

More floating home than superyacht

Although listed on yacht sales platforms, the Shine Down differs significantly from conventional luxury yachts. Its broad beam and multi-storey design make it resemble a modern waterfront mansion more than a sleek cruiser. The vessel also features two laundry rooms, a dumbwaiter connecting decks, luxury interiors designed by Rita Durio and Associates, multiple outdoor entertainment areas and extensive glazing that fills the interior with natural light.Unlike permanently moored floating homes, the GLV-120 is fully self-propelled. It is powered by Cummins QSM11 diesel engines, allowing it to relocate under its own power rather than relying on tugboats. While it is not intended for high-speed cruising, the vessel gives owners the flexibility to change locations without sacrificing the amenities of a full-sized luxury residence.

Why the floating mansion is making headlines

The Shine Down has attracted attention not only because of its $15 million price tag but also because it blurs the line between architecture, engineering and marine design. Floating homes have become increasingly popular in parts of Europe and North America, but few combine residential-scale living space with advanced solar technology and self-propelled capability on this scale. Now listed for sale through Worldwide Yacht Sales in Florida, the GLV-120 offers a rare opportunity to own one of the most unusual luxury floating residences currently available on the market.
