Kajol recalls crying after slapping her first co-star Kamal Sadanah

Kajol recalls crying and apologizing after slapping her first co-star Kamal Sadanah: 'It went beyond my morality, my ethics...'

Kajol, during her debut film ‘Bekhudi,’ struggled with a slapping scene involving Kamal Sadanah, feeling it was against her morals to hit someone so kind. She recalled lightly tapping him initially, but after a comment from the director, she used her frustration to fuel the scene. Overwhelmed with guilt afterward, she broke down and apologized to Kamal for the unfairness.

Kajol, who made her film debut at just 16 with Bekhudi alongside Kamal Sadanah, recently recalled struggling with a scene where she had to slap him. She didn’t feel he deserved it, and after finally doing the scene, she ended up crying and apologizing to him.

Feeling unprepared for the scene

In an interview with Brut India, Kajol said she wasn’t ready when asked to slap Kamal for a scene. She explained that it felt impossible to hit someone so kind and blameless in front of her. She couldn’t understand it and just couldn’t bring herself to raise her hand. Kajol added that it went against her morals and conscience—she liked Kamal, found him sweet and polite, and thought he was lovely to work with, so slapping him felt completely unnatural at the time. The actress said she would only lightly tap Kamal on the face and then pull back. Her director, Rahul Rawail, made a comment suggesting she was taking out some personal frustration on Kamal, which made her upset. She used that anger toward her director to bring intensity to the scene.

Breaking down after the take

She further remembered that after she got the scene right, she started crying. She felt really bad for being unfair to Kamal, who hadn’t done anything wrong, and later said sorry to him. She said acting in emotional scenes can be intense and makes you let go of your walls, helping you connect with your real feelings. The Kajol even said that everyone should try acting at least once. Being in front of a camera and a crowd, laughing, crying, or doing strange things, helps you see that most of it doesn’t really matter. What truly matters is how you view yourself, not how others see you.
