Renowned Indian folk artist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai, a celebrated exponent of the Pandavani tradition, has passed away after a prolonged illness. She breathed her last at AIIMS Raipur, where she had been undergoing treatment. Her death marks a significant loss to India’s folk and cultural heritage, as she was widely credited with bringing Pandavani—a traditional storytelling form based on the Mahabharata—to national and international prominence. Teejan Bai was admired for her powerful narrative style and distinctive performance technique, which earned her numerous prestigious honours, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Her contribution helped preserve and popularize Chhattisgarh’s rich folk traditions across generations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over her demise and acknowledged her invaluable contribution to Indian culture. Her passing has led to widespread mourning in the cultural community, with tributes pouring in from artists, leaders, and admirers across the country.
