Nepal Gen-Z Protest: Oli Government in Crisis as 9 Ministers Resign, Law Minister’s House Torched

Nepal’s political crisis has taken a decisive turn as 9 cabinet ministers from the KP Sharma Oli government tendered their resignations on Tuesday, September 9. The resignations come amid widespread outrage over the violent suppression of youth-led Gen-Z protests that erupted following the government’s social media ban.The ministers cited their disillusionment with the government’s repressive policies, especially the excessive force used on peaceful protestors during Monday’s demonstrations, which left 19 people dead and over 500 injured. The protest movement, driven largely by students and young professionals, has rapidly transformed into a nationwide call for democratic accountability and anti-corruption reform. In a significant escalation, protestors in Birgunj torched the house of Nepal’s Law Minister, Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, accusing him of backing the controversial internet censorship laws and defending police brutality. The resignations signal a growing fracture within Oli’s ruling coalition. With chaos intensifying in Kathmandu, Birgunj, and other provinces, and even support eroding within his own party, Prime Minister Oli’s position appears increasingly untenable. The Gen-Z movement, once dismissed as a digital outcry, has now become the most serious challenge to Nepal’s ruling establishment in years.
