Kolkata Taratala Roof Collapse: 60 Workers Feared Trapped as Massive Rescue Operation Intensifies

A major industrial accident has triggered panic in Kolkata’s Taratala area after the roof of an under-construction warehouse suddenly collapsed on Transport Road, trapping several workers beneath the debris. Authorities fear that between 50 and 60 laborers may have been present at the site when the structure gave way during working hours. According to preliminary information, workers were carrying out routine construction activities when a large section of the warehouse roof collapsed without warning, leading to scenes of chaos and desperation. Rescue teams rushed to the location shortly after the incident, while emergency services launched a large-scale operation to search for survivors. Officials confirmed that at least four workers have been rescued so far and shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. However, concerns remain high as rescuers continue to hear voices and cries for help from beneath the rubble. Rescue personnel are reportedly calling out the names of workers believed to be trapped in an effort to establish contact and determine their locations. Multiple agencies, including Kolkata Police, Disaster Management teams, Civil Defence personnel, Fire and Emergency Services, and specialized rescue units, have been deployed at the site. Heavy machinery, including large cranes, has been brought in to accelerate debris removal and improve access to areas where survivors may be trapped. Drone surveillance is also being used to assess structural conditions and assist rescue efforts. The collapse has raised serious questions about construction safety standards and whether the project complied with legal and engineering regulations. Allegations regarding possible unauthorized or unsafe construction practices are likely to become a key focus of the investigation. Senior government officials, including urban development representatives and municipal authorities, have reached the site to monitor operations. As rescuers race against time, the primary focus remains saving lives and ensuring the safe evacuation of anyone still trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
