Imtiaz Ali wants to bring Radha-Krishna’s story to screen

Imtiaz Ali wants to bring Radha-Krishna's story to screen: 'Has a deeper philosophy'

Imtiaz Ali, known for romantic films, revealed he never intentionally writes love stories, adding that ‘Jab We Met’ was not written as one. He expressed his desire to make a film on Radha-Krishna, calling it a story with deeper philosophy beyond romance.

Imtiaz Ali is famous for making romantic films, and his fans always wait excitedly for his next movie. But in a recent interview, he said something surprising that he never actually plans to make a love story when he starts writing. He even said that ‘Jab We Met’ was not written as a romance film. He also shared that he wishes to make a film on the story of Radha and Krishna someday.

Imtiaz Ali on romance in his films

During a conversation with ABP Live, Imtiaz was questioned about the recurring theme of romance in his films. He responded by saying, “I don’t want to add romance to everything but it just happens naturally, so I don’t stop that.” The filmmaker went on to reveal that he never viewed Love Aaj Kal as a romantic film either. “I never made any of my films like a love story. When Love Aaj Kal was being named, I thought Aaj Kal would be a better name. I thought if this is even a love story? My team explained it to me how they saw it as a love story but I saw it as an interpretation of love across different eras. I definitely did not make Jab We Met as a love story. But this comes up in my films again and again,” he said.

Imtiaz Ali draws inspiration from Indian mythology

When the conversation shifted to his future projects, Imtiaz opened up about his deep connection with Indian mythology. “There are many stories of Indian mythology that have inspired me a lot. I feel I should be capable enough to make those stories,” he shared. Pressed further to name a specific story he had in mind, he did not hesitate. “I have said this before as well. I want to make Radha-Krishna’s story,” he said. When the interviewer pointed out that this too would essentially be a love story, Imtiaz laughed it off and responded, “It’s not only a love story. There are many layers to their story. It has a deeper philosophy.”

Imtiaz Ali says he is still trying to understand love

When it came to defining love itself, Imtiaz shared his belief that no story can ever truly exist without it. “I don’t think you can make a story without love. That love could be towards your nation, or for someone who has passed away, and someone is seeking revenge for them, but the story is always about love. You can show it differently,” he explained. Interestingly, despite spending his entire career exploring romance and emotion on screen, Imtiaz admitted that love still remains a mystery to him personally. “I am still trying to understand love and I make every film trying to answer that question. I am more confused than before,” he said.
