‘House of the Dragon Season 3’ early reviews: The series is hailed as ‘best so far’

Early reviews for ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 have arrived ahead of its premiere on June 21 and June 22 globally, and the response so far appears more positive than any previous instalment. Reviewers have praised the upcoming chapter for its action, visuals and characters, with several drawing direct comparisons to ‘Game of Thrones’ itself. The ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel continues to follow House Targaryen’s war of succession as the story moves toward the notorious Dance of the Dragons, a massive civil war that pits the royal family of Westeros against itself.

What reviewers are saying about the new season

Several writers called Season 3 a clear step up from its predecessor. Megan Lachinski wrote that it is “the series’ best so far, the visual effects and cinematography are both a vast improvement over the first two seasons.” Joonatan Itkonen echoed similar sentiments, noting that “the series is still thrilling, and some moments still remind us of how great both it and ‘Game of Thrones’ once were.” Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky praised the season’s dragon sequences specifically, writing that “the visual effects team has outdone themselves, giving these massive beasts a terrifying, majestic weight that makes them feel entirely real.” Matthew Jackson from Looper. com also highlighted improvements in the writing, saying it “has become more agile, more versatile, able to inject more character into each action and reaction.”Alison Herman pointed to a specific standout moment, writing that the Battle of the Gullet is “indeed spectacular” and should help allay concerns about the show treading water narratively. Daniel Fienberg offered a more measured take, noting that “if you want spectacle, without much behind it, you’ll be pleased.”Not every review was without reservations. Katie Doll noted that the show “can’t escape bad habits,” pointing out that pacing remains “an intimidating mystery” in this latest season as well.

Praise for Emma D’Arcy’s performance

Several reviewers singled out Emma D’Arcy’s performance as a particular highlight of the new season. Melody McCune from MovieWeb wrote that ” Emma D’Arcy should be writing their Emmy speech for their work this season.” Therese Lacson added that “D’Arcy is at their best in this season, balancing the madness of a Targaryen and the hardened ambition of a woman claiming what has always rightly been hers.”
