Could E20 Fuel Leave You With A Repair Bill And No Insurance Payout?

  • E20 petrol rollout raises concerns for older incompatible vehicles.
  • Insurers, like ICICI Lombard, may reject related damage claims.
  • Ethanol gradually corrodes parts, potentially voiding insurance coverage.

India’s push towards cleaner and more locally sourced fuels has gathered pace with the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol. But as millions of motorists fill up with higher-ethanol fuel, a new question is beginning to surface: what happens if E20 damages an older vehicle?

The issue has gained attention after ICICI Lombard, one of India’s largest private-sector general insurers, indicated that claims arising from E20-related damage in older, non-compatible vehicles could potentially be rejected under certain circumstances.

The development highlights a growing challenge facing owners of vehicles manufactured before India’s transition towards higher ethanol blends.

The Insurance Warning That Caught Motorists’ Attention

In a blog post published on June 9, 2026, ICICI Lombard stated that damage linked to the use of E20 fuel in vehicles not designed for higher ethanol blends may be viewed as improper use or negligence, reported Livemint.

“Using a fuel your vehicle was not made for can be treated as improper use or negligence. Insurers may review these claims from that angle, and rejection is possible,” the insurer said.

The reference has since been removed from the company’s blog. However, the remarks have sparked wider discussion about a grey area that many vehicle owners may not have considered until they need to make an insurance claim.

As E20 petrol becomes the default fuel option at filling stations across India, concerns are growing among motorists about compatibility, long-term engine health and potential liability if damage occurs.

Why Older Vehicles Are At The Centre Of The Debate

India’s automobile industry began selling E20-compatible vehicles from April 2023.

That means a significant number of cars and two-wheelers currently on Indian roads were originally designed to run on lower ethanol blends.

With the nationwide E20 rollout now largely complete and premium fuel alternatives carrying a higher price tag, many owners of older vehicles have limited options at the fuel station.

“Most vehicles on Indian roads predate the 2023 compatibility threshold and were never designed for high-ethanol blends. Finding E10 or unblended petrol is increasingly difficult,” ICICI Lombard noted.

The result is a situation where many consumers may be using E20 fuel despite uncertainty over how their vehicles could respond over the long term.

What Exactly Is The Concern?

Ethanol offers several environmental and energy-security benefits. It burns cleaner than conventional petrol and helps reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil.

However, ethanol behaves differently inside an engine.

According to ICICI Lombard, the larger concern is not immediate engine failure but gradual wear and tear.

“Ethanol is corrosive. In vehicles not built for it, it can degrade rubber seals, damage fuel lines, and wear down engine parts gradually. The damage may not be immediate. It builds quietly, which makes it harder to catch and easier to dispute at claim time,” the insurer warned.

Experts note that ethanol also contains less energy per litre than petrol, which can result in a modest reduction in fuel efficiency.

For many motorists, however, the bigger worry is whether any resulting damage would be covered by insurance.

Insurance Valid, But Claims Are A Different Matter

One of the most important distinctions highlighted by the insurer is that using E20 fuel does not automatically invalidate a motor insurance policy.

The government had previously clarified that insurance coverage itself remains intact. However, that does not necessarily mean every claim linked to E20-related damage will be approved.

According to ICICI Lombard, most standard motor insurance policies exclude consequential damage, losses that occur gradually over time rather than as a result of a sudden incident such as an accident.

“Standard policies usually exclude consequential damage, which is damage that builds up over time rather than happening in a single incident, like an accident,” the insurer said.

This distinction could become crucial if an insurer concludes that engine damage developed progressively because of prolonged use of incompatible fuel.

Will Engine Protection Add-Ons Help?

Many vehicle owners assume that engine protection riders offer blanket coverage for mechanical damage.

The reality may be more complicated. ICICI Lombard pointed out that most engine protection add-ons are typically designed to cover situations such as water ingress, oil leakage or accidental damage. Coverage for chemical corrosion linked to fuel compatibility issues may not necessarily be included.

As a result, policyholders are being encouraged to read exclusions carefully and verify the scope of protection rather than relying on assumptions.

Manufacturers Could Also Refuse Responsibility

Insurance is only one side of the equation.

Vehicle manufacturers may also take a different view if damage occurs in a non-compatible vehicle.

“If your car is not E20-compatible and damage occurs, the manufacturer may reject the claim. It is best to check your manual or confirm with the dealer,” ICICI Lombard said.

That creates a potentially difficult situation for owners of older vehicles, who could find themselves caught between manufacturer warranty limitations and insurance policy exclusions.

Is There A Way To Reduce The Risk?

While there is no universal solution, the insurer suggested that premium-grade fuels may offer some relief for older vehicles. “Premium fuels often have lower ethanol content, which is easier on older engines. It is not a full fix, but it helps,” the company noted.

However, premium fuels generally come at a higher cost, creating another trade-off for consumers already grappling with rising vehicle ownership expenses.

The debate illustrates one of the less-discussed consequences of India’s rapid ethanol-blending programme.

The government has aggressively expanded ethanol use to improve energy security, reduce crude oil imports and support farmers through increased demand for agricultural feedstocks.

While the long-term policy objectives remain clear, millions of owners of pre-2023 vehicles are now navigating practical questions around compatibility, maintenance and insurance coverage.
