Paul recalls Aamir’s tip for ‘Teen Guna Lagaan’ scene

Paul Blackthorne recalls tip from Aamir Khan for 'Teen Guna Lagaan' scene which really helped him: 'Poor Anil Mehta, the DOP, kept saying...'

For many movie lovers, one of the most unforgettable moments in ‘Lagaan’ comes when Captain Andrew Russell announces the crushing tax hike with the now-iconic words, “Teen guna lagaan.” The scene, packed with tension and dread, cemented Russell as one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable villains and became a defining moment in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Oscar-nominated classic. However, 25 years after the film’s release, actor Paul Blackthorne has revealed that the intensity audiences witnessed on screen was partly the result of a real-life challenge. The British actor, who portrayed Captain Russell opposite Aamir Khan, recently shared that he struggled to keep his eyes open while filming the famous sequence under Gujarat’s blazing sun.Paul reflected on the scene and credited the film’s editing for elevating its impact. “The editing of that scene is just fantastic. Brilliant, it is. Building up the tension is fantastic,” Paul said in an interview with NDTV. While the scene appeared seamless on screen, the actor recalled that the weather conditions made filming particularly difficult. Facing the harsh sunlight directly was proving to be a challenge for him and cinematographer Anil Mehta. “I couldn’t see a thing. The Gujarat sun was just blasting. Poor Anil Mehta, the DOP, kept saying, ‘Can you open your eyes?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t open my eyes, it’s very bright,’” he recalled. It was then that Aamir Khan offered a practical solution. According to Paul, the actor suggested keeping his eyes shut until the camera rolled.“Aamir said, ‘Look into the sun with your eyes closed and then open them on action. You’ll have about 10 seconds before your eyes start squinting again.’ So it was Aamir’s tip. I’d keep my eyes closed, hear ‘action’, open them and quickly say the line before my eyes shut again,” Paul said. The simple trick worked perfectly, helping create the chilling moment that would go on to become one of the most remembered scenes in the film. Russell’s declaration of ‘Teen guna lagaan’ remains etched in popular culture even today. Paul also looked back at another challenge he faced while making the film, cricket. Though Captain Russell appeared commanding on the field in the movie’s climactic match, the actor admitted he had little idea how to play the sport when he landed the role.“In auditions, whenever they ask, ‘Can you do this? Can you do that?’ you just say yes. Cricket? ‘Oh yes, I can play cricket.’ Of course, I couldn’t,” he said. The actor spent months preparing for ‘Lagaan’, working on his Hindi lines, understanding the character and learning Victorian-style horse riding. Cricket, however, seemed deceptively simple to him. “I thought, it’s just cricket, I’ll be fine,” he recalled.Reality struck during pre-production when Aamir organised a friendly cricket match among the cast members. “Aamir said, ‘Paul, you open the batting.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ First ball, out. I asked if we could go again. Second ball, out. I thought, this isn’t going very well,” Paul shared. The experience led to additional cricket coaching before filming commenced. Even then, Paul joked that movie magic ultimately did most of the heavy lifting. “In the film, you see this big thunderous ball coming down and Russell smashing it. In reality, somebody is standing five feet away saying, ‘Try and hit this one ball.’ And I’d miss it again,” he said.Looking back at the experience with humour, the actor concluded, “The power of film saved my bacon.”A quarter of a century later, ‘Lagaan’ continues to be celebrated for its storytelling, performances and unforgettable moments. And as Paul Blackthorne’s anecdotes reveal, some of the film’s most iconic scenes were created with a little ingenuity, a lot of patience and a touch of cinematic magic. Go to Source
