Olivia Rodrigo talks Filipino roots while making lumpia

Olivia Rodrigo talks Filipino food, family and new album while making lumpia: 'I'm half Filipino'

Olivia Rodrigo brought Filipino food into British Vogue’s kitchen, showing viewers how to make lumpia, a dish tied to her family memories. The Filipino American singer prepared chicken lumpia and a Calamansi Paloma for Vogue’s “Now Serving” video, while speaking about her grandmother, tour life, and the sound of her next album. She also looked back at her 2024 visit to the Philippines, where she performed for fans and explored local food.

According to ABS-CBN, Rodrigo demonstrated the Filipino delicacy in a British Vogue feature and described why it remains close to her. “They’re really delicious and savory. And like kind of greasy in the best way… It’s just like feel-good food,” she said.Rodrigo said the dish reminds her of family gatherings. “My grandma used to make them for Thanksgiving every year so that was probably my first introduction to lumpia. I’m making like roll ones, and she would always make the triangle ones, but triangle ones are saved for Thanksgiving for me,” she shared.British Vogue also noted that Rodrigo made the dish for its “Now Serving” series. In the video, she introduced the segment by saying, “Hey Vogue, I’m Olivia Rodrigo and today I’m going to be making some lumpia and a Paloma. Very excited.”She also joked about her drink choice. “Honestly, my go-to drink is a vodka cranberry but I thought that that was a little bit too tacky for Vogue so Paloma is like slightly elevated which is why I love it,” Rodrigo said.

During the same feature, Rodrigo teased her upcoming album and said she wants to write from a brighter place. “I feel like the album is very varied. I really want to figure out a way to kind of write about joy in this album,” she said. She added, “I feel like my last two albums are very rightfully so kind of angsty and heartbroken. And just as a creative endeavor and also because I was experiencing a lot of joy in my life, I wanted to figure out how to inject that into the songs that I was making.”ABS-CBN also recalled Rodrigo’s October 2024 trip to the Philippines for her Guts tour. She said then, “I’m half Filipino. My dad’s side of family is Filipino. Always been on my bucket list, I’ve always wanted to come here for as long as I can remember and it’s gonna be really fun and I’m just so happy to be here.”During that visit, Rodrigo toured Intramuros with her father, ate at Sarsa, and visited the Manila headquarters of the Jhpiego Foundation. She donated the net proceeds from her Philippine concert to the foundation.
