The Kerala health department has achieved a rare feat by successfully treating a 17-year-old man who was affected by both amoeba and fungus in brain. It was confirmed by state health minister Veena George who added that this was the first known case in the world where a patient with both infections, amoebic meningoencephalitis and aspergillus flavus, made a full recovery after treatment.

The minister further stated that the man, who is a student, was admitted in Alapuzha medical college for three weeks before being shifted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college.

Speaking to reporters, she said, “I wanted to share the case of a 17-year-old student who was affected by both amoeba and fungus in the brain. In medical literature, no one has survived such a case.”

The student underwent two surgeries as part of treatment, the CM said.

“We are so happy that the boy is back. So I would like to appreciate the team of Thiruvananthapuram medical college, George added.

22 Active Cases Of Amoebic Meningoencephalitis In Kerala

In the past two years, 86 cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis have been reported in the state and the mortality rate is 23 to 24 per cent, she added.

Currently, the states has 22 active cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis with 11 each in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.

Upon being asked about why so many cases are reported in Kerala, she said, “I have to say there is nothing to worry about it because our state guideline is that we have to test every encephalitis case and we have to test for amoeba also. Because of that we are detecting the cases. The mortality rate of Naegleriasis case is 98 per cent. The case in Kerala the mortality rate is 20 per cent. That is the advantage we are able to bring them back to home.”
