The Central Government has reduced the number of subsidised LPG cylinders available annually under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from nine to four. The decision has been taken after considering the average domestic consumption of beneficiary households. When the scheme was launched in May 2016, eligible families were entitled to 12 subsidised 14.2-kg LPG cylinders each year. The quota was reduced from 12 to nine last year and has now been further cut to four cylinders annually. The move comes shortly after the government increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹29. The Ujjwala Yojana currently covers nearly 10 crore beneficiary families across the country and aims to provide access to clean cooking fuel for economically weaker households.
