Ladakh back on tourism surge: Thailand, Vietnam & US lead foreign tourist arrivals

.

SRINAGAR: Ladakh tourism numbers hit a 121 per cent increase in May this year, the start of the region’s peak tourism season, compared to May last year. A statement issued by the Ladakh administration on Saturday states that foreign tourist arrivals also rose by more than 15%, with most tourists from Thailand, Vietnam and the US. Tourists from Japan, the UK, Germany and France have also significantly contributed to the sector.Ladakh LG Vinai Kumar Saxena attributed the growth to a series of reforms and the creation of tourist-friendly infrastructure and amenities. “Initiatives like tourism sector reforms to reduce compliance burden, simplifying the cumbersome documentation and granting industry status to hotels and guest houses in Ladakh, have developed confidence among tourism stakeholders, including hoteliers, guest house owners, and tour operators.”The govt said Ladakh welcomed 72,834 tourists in May this year, compared to 32,927 in May 2025. Between Jan 2006 and May 2006, Ladakh welcomed 1,17,546 tourists compared to 81,827 during the same period last year.Rigzin Wangmo Lachic, president of All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association, said, “It has been a long time since we have seen a truly positive season. The industry has faced several challenging years, including the impact of the Pahalgam incident last year, which was reflected in reduced visitor numbers.” She added, “We must promote year-round tourism. By encouraging travel during spring, autumn, and winter, and by promoting rural destinations beyond the few well-known circuits, we can reduce seasonal pressure and ensure more equitable economic growth across Ladakh.”
