Horror genre gets extra legs with new releases

Hindi cinema is witnessing a horror genre resurgence, influenced by Hollywood and Gujarati films. ‘The Conjuring: Final Rites’ and ‘Vash Level 2’ dominate the box office, while stars like Kartik Aaryan explore zombie themes. Successes like ‘Shaitaan’ and folklore-based horror-comedies are driving this trend, with major studios investing in diverse horror projects and blending genres to captivate audiences.

Over the past some time the horror genre has been seeing a resurgence in Hindi Cinema where pure horror films like Shaitaan, Maa,Tumbbad and many different variation of horror films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise or Stree series etc are being made and big names are attaching themselves to the project. But the magic of horror has not been limited just to Hindi films, even Hollywood and Gujarati horror films are being accepted in a big way in India. At present two horror films The Conjuring : Final Rites and Vash Level 2 have been dominating the box office. The Conjuring : Final Rites , the last installment of the Conjuring horror series has minted Rs 50 .50 crore in India in just three days already making it the 4th biggest Hollywood film of the year. Many audience members are calling it the perfect final part of the horror series which has scared the audiences for decades. Vash Level 2 is the sequel to Janki Bodiwala’s Vash which was released in 2023 and later remade in Hindi by Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat. Vash Level 2 takes the story ahead from the first past and in the 11 days the film has minted Rs 11.74 crore at the box office- an amount unheard for a Gujarati horror film. The film has been distributed by Kumar Mangat’s office and there could be a possibility of the film being made in Hindi to take the Shaitaan series ahead. Now the horror genre is also adding Zombie’s to its list with Kartik Aaryan taking the trend ahead as he is rumoured to be in talks with Vishuvardhan , director of Shershaah for the film. The zombie was first explored in the new millennium by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK with their film Go Goa Gone headlined by Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Kemmu, Anand Tiwati and Vir Das. Ajay Devgn’s ‘Shaitaan’ has been instrumental in bringing horror-thrillers back into the limelight. The film went on to earn more than Rs 150 crore at the global box office. The success of it also let Ajay back another horror film with Kajol in the lead titled Maa. The film thought minted around Rs 30 crore ,it could very well be part of the horror universe Ajay is building. He has also greenlit another horror film for his nephew Amaan in the lead which is currently under production. The 2018 film Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah, became a cult classic due to its unique folklore-inspired storytelling and atmospheric horror. Its popularity on streaming platforms has strengthened its impact over time. The film was re-reeleased last year at the cinema halls and minted more money than it’s original run. The success of the film led to the makers finally announcing it’s sequel. While the first part had to gon through a lot of struggles to raise funds, the second part is being mounted on a reported budget of Rs 100 crore. Horror-comedy has emerged as a key driver of the genre’s resurgence, with films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Stree 2, and Munjya proving that the combination of horror and humor is a winning formula at the box office. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, featuring Kartik Aaryan, is the latest entry in the beloved franchise, with expectations running high following the massive success of its predecessor. Similarly, Stree 2, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Stree, is anticipated to expand upon the folklore and mystery surrounding its titular ghost. Munjya, produced by Maddock Films, was a sleeper hit, demonstrating the potential of folklore-based horror-comedy and strengthening Maddock’s position as a key player in the horror genre.Dinesh Viijan’s production house has emerged as a significant champion of horror cinema in Bollywood. The company having delivered films like Stree, Stree 2 , Munjya and Bhediya has an ambitious slate of horror films lined up, including Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna along with Paresh Rawal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is all set to introduce vampires to Bollywood. He had also announced a slate of 8 films to take his horror comedy franchise ahead. Several factors have contributed to this newfound love for horror in Bollywood:

  1. Changing Audience Preferences: Viewers are now more open to unconventional storytelling and experimental genres. The success of international horror films on streaming platforms has made Indian audiences more appreciative of sophisticated horror narratives.
  2. Improved Production Values: Bollywood horror films are now investing in better CGI, sound design, and cinematography, making them more immersive and visually compelling.
  3. Blending Horror with Other Genres: The horror-comedy trend has made the genre more accessible to a wider audience, combining scares with humor to appeal to both horror enthusiasts and casual viewers.
  4. Folklore-Based Horror: Films like ‘Tumbbad,’ ‘Stree,’ and ‘Munjya’ have successfully tapped into Indian folklore, giving the genre a unique cultural touch that differentiates it from Western horror.
  5. Star Power: Big names like Ajay Devgn, Kajol, Ayushmann Khurrana, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh, and Kartik Aaryan being associated with horror projects have added credibility to the genre, making it more mainstream.
