NEW DELHI: Congress General Secretary and leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Manipur on September 13, calling it an insult to the people of the state who have waited nearly 29 months for his attention. In a post on X, Ramesh said the visit, being hailed by the PM’s supporters, would last only about three hours.“What does he hope to accomplish by such a rushed trip? This is actually an insult to the people of the state who have waited for him for 29 long and agonising months,” he wrote. The Congress leader said that the Prime Minister’s September 13 visit would be largely symbolic, showing insensitivity towards the people of Manipur.According to reports, PM Modi is expected to visit both Mizoram and Manipur on September 13. If confirmed, this will be his first visit to Manipur since ethnic clashes erupted between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023.The state has been under President’s Rule since February 2025 following the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh. Ongoing violence has left thousands displaced, with families struggling to rebuild homes, businesses and lives amid continuing uncertainty. National Herald has labeled PM Modi as India’s “most widely-travelled leader”. According to their X post, he has taken 177 domestic trips and 44 international trips since the conflict began, raising questions about the limited attention to the crisis in Manipur.
