A major controversy unfolded in Maharashtra’s Kalyan area during Bakrid celebrations after tensions flared at the historic Durgadi Fort, where members of Hindu organisations and Shiv Sena workers gathered during ongoing prayers. The situation led to heavy sloganeering and heightened security concerns as police closely monitored the sensitive location to prevent escalation. According to reports, the dispute is linked to a long-standing religious and legal conflict surrounding the Durgadi Fort premises in Thane district near Mumbai. The site has remained controversial for decades, with both Hindu and Muslim communities claiming historical and religious rights over the land. While one side considers the location associated with a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, the other claims the presence of a mazar and links the site to Waqf property rights. During Bakrid prayers on Friday, groups associated with Hindu organisations reportedly assembled near the fort and conducted Hanuman Chalisa recitations, while raising slogans and reiterating their claim over the disputed site. Shiv Sena supporters carrying party symbols were also seen participating in the demonstrations. Local authorities deployed security personnel in the area as crowds gathered from both communities. Officials are said to be maintaining close surveillance to avoid any communal disturbance in the region. The dispute surrounding Durgadi Fort has a long political and social history dating back several decades. Political observers note that the issue has repeatedly resurfaced during religious occasions and festivals, often leading to heightened tensions and protests. The matter remains under judicial consideration, with court proceedings still pending regarding ownership and rights over the disputed premises. Meanwhile, authorities continue to appeal for peace and restraint as the sensitive issue once again draws attention across Maharashtra.
