Inside America’s hidden cave city where hundreds of children and families live off-grid inside sandstone cliffs

Deep in Utah’s desert near Moab lies one of America’s strangest hidden communities. Known as Rockland Ranch, or “The Rock”, the settlement is home to dozens of families living inside cave-like homes carved into sandstone cliffs. The homes were blasted into the mountainside with dynamite during the 1970s. Over time, the isolated religious community grew into a self-sustaining settlement where hundreds of children have been raised. Solar panels, livestock and wells help support daily life. To outsiders, the ranch looks almost unreal. Part underground city and part survivalist colony, it remains hidden within Utah’s vast red-rock landscape.

Unlike normal neighbourhoods, many homes at Rockland Ranch are built directly into sandstone formations. Founder Robert Dean Foster reportedly used dynamite to create large openings inside the cliffs. Residents later transformed those spaces into modern homes. From a distance, the settlement blends into the desert landscape. Front entrances and windows are built outward from the cliff face while large sections of the homes extend deep into the rock. The sandstone also acts as natural insulation. Homes stay cooler during the summer and warmer during cold desert nights. The unusual design has led many visitors to compare the community to a science-fiction film or a hidden underground city.

Living off-grid in the desert

Rockland Ranch was designed to operate largely independent of nearby towns. Residents rely on solar power, private wells, farming and livestock to support the community.Families grow crops and raise animals together. Many residents also share labour and maintenance work across the settlement. The remote location has created a strong communal lifestyle where neighbours often depend on each other rather than outside services.Despite the isolated setting, many homes still include modern conveniences such as plumbing, electricity, kitchens and internet access.

The religious community behind “The Rock”

Rockland Ranch is connected to Mormon fundamentalism, a movement that continued practising plural marriage after the mainstream Mormon church abandoned polygamy in the 19th century. The community was founded by Robert Dean Foster in 1977. He wanted to create a remote settlement where families could live according to their religious beliefs away from public attention. Around 35 families reportedly live there today. Roughly half are believed to practise polygamy while others are monogamous.Large families are common within the settlement. Hundreds of children have reportedly grown up there over the decades. Recent viral posts about the ranch sparked online discussions about family size, religion and alternative ways of living.

Why the internet is fascinated by Rockland Ranch

Photos of Rockland Ranch often go viral because the homes appear built directly into giant canyon walls. Many people online compare the settlement to ancient cave cities, survivalist compounds or dystopian movie sets.Others are fascinated by the idea of a self-sufficient community living far from mainstream American society. The combination of desert isolation, cave homes and large families makes the ranch especially unusual to outsiders. The community has also become part of broader debates surrounding birth rates and modern family life. Some people admire the ranch’s self-reliance and communal lifestyle. Others question the isolation and religious culture surrounding Mormon fundamentalist groups.

A community surrounded by controversy

Like many fundamentalist Mormon communities, Rockland Ranch has faced criticism over issues linked to polygamy and isolated religious living.Critics often raise concerns about women’s autonomy, religious pressure and children growing up with limited exposure to the outside world. Others question the power structures that can exist inside tightly controlled communities.Supporters argue that residents willingly choose the lifestyle and value the community’s focus on family, cooperation and self-sufficiency.Rockland Ranch has generally been viewed as separate from the more controversial FLDS Church once led by Warren Jeffs, whose organisation faced major criminal investigations and abuse allegations.

Life inside America’s hidden cave city

Despite the controversy, Rockland Ranch remains one of the most unusual communities in the United States. Its cliffside homes and isolated desert setting continue attracting photographers, filmmakers and curious travellers. The ranch has appeared in documentaries, television series and photo essays exploring remote religious communities in America. For many outsiders, the idea of families living inside sandstone cliffs sounds almost impossible. Yet for the residents of Rockland Ranch, the hidden cave city has been home for nearly 50 years.
