MIRA ROAD FLASHPOINT: Bakrid Goat Row Sparks Protests, Slogans and Tight Police Security

Tension gripped Mumbai’s Mira Road area after a dispute over goats kept inside a residential housing society ahead of Bakrid escalated into protests, sloganeering and heavy police deployment. The controversy erupted at Poonam Estate Cluster, a large housing complex where residents allegedly objected to more than 50 goats being housed inside the premises in temporary sheds. According to local reports, the municipal authorities dismantled a shed constructed for the animals, citing rules that allegedly prohibit keeping goats inside residential societies. However, while the structure was removed, the goats reportedly remained inside the complex, triggering fresh protests late at night when another temporary arrangement was allegedly being set up. The situation intensified as members linked to Hindu organizations gathered outside the society and began demonstrations demanding immediate removal of the goats. Protesters accused the police and municipal administration of failing to enforce regulations properly. During the unrest, one individual reportedly suffered injuries after being attacked with a sharp weapon, leading to an FIR being registered at Kashimira Police Station. On Tuesday, Hindu groups staged further protests outside the gated complex and recited Hanuman Chalisa while raising slogans against the administration. Demonstrators alleged that local residents were being intimidated and warned of larger protests if the authorities failed to act. Police personnel remained stationed both inside and outside the society to prevent the situation from escalating further. The dispute has now turned into a sensitive communal and law-and-order issue, with political and religious undertones adding to tensions in the locality. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid fears that the standoff could intensify if negotiations between residents, civic officials and protesting groups fail to produce a resolution.
