Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply once again, with reports of a military confrontation near Bandar Abbas. According to US media reports, a joint US-Israel operation targeted two Iranian speedboats allegedly involved in laying naval mines in the region. The operation reportedly resulted in the death of four members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Following the strike, Iranian forces are said to have launched missiles toward US aircraft, prompting a retaliatory response. US forces allegedly struck Iranian missile launch sites in what they described as self-defense. The situation has significantly increased fears of a wider regional conflict, especially amid already stalled diplomatic talks between the two countries. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open without restrictions or “tolls,” calling Iran’s actions there unlawful. Tehran, however, insists it has the right to regulate the strategic waterway and impose environmental fees on passing vessels. The renewed clashes come at a time when nuclear disputes over enriched uranium and control of the Strait of Hormuz had already stalled peace negotiations, raising concerns that diplomatic efforts may collapse completely.
