Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has underlined that India’s trade negotiations are guided by substance and fairness, not timelines. Speaking on the country’s approach to US-India trade talks, Goyal stressed that New Delhi does not work under pressure to close agreements in a haste.

“We never negotiate trade deals with deadline – we only negotiate good trade deals which are mutually beneficial,” Goyal said, adding that India remains committed to ensuring fairness in all its partnerships. He further noted, “We are always open for an equitable and mutually beneficial trade deal.”

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also confirmed on Tuesday that India is in active discussions with the United States on a bilateral trade agreement (BTA).

“We are in dialogue with the US for a BTA,” Goyal said at an industry chamber event focused on sustainability.

Negotiations on the pact began in March, with five rounds of talks completed so far. However, after Washington imposed a 50 per cent duty on Indian goods from August 27, the US side deferred its scheduled visit for the sixth round, which was to take place on August 25.

As of now, no fresh dates have been set for the next round of negotiations.
