The Allahabad High Court has raised strong concerns about the lack of safeguards for women being trained by male instructors in gyms, warning that such practices put both their safety and dignity at risk.

The observations were made by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav while hearing an appeal filed by Nitin Saini, a gym trainer from Meerut. Saini has been accused of making caste-based remarks against a female client.

The complainant told the trial court that the accused not only insulted her but also recorded obscene videos of another woman gym-goer and sent those videos to her. Taking note of these allegations, the bench said that offences under Sections 354 of the Indian Penal Code (assault or use of criminal force to outrage the modesty of a woman) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) may also apply.

According to PTI, the court has set September 8 as the next date of hearing in the case.

In its order dated August 27, the high court said, “It is a matter of serious concern that presently male gym trainers are imparting training to female clients without adequate safeguards to ensure their safety and dignity.”

“Considering the aforesaid circumstances, the Investigating Officer of Police Station Brahmpuri, Meerut is directed to file a personal affidavit indicating that whether the gym operated by the appellant was duly registered under the law. Whether the appellant has been arrested in connection with the present case or not, and whether in the gym, trainers are female or not,” the court said.

Justice Yadav, who has often drawn attention for his outspoken remarks, had earlier sparked debate by asserting that the country should run according to the majority and by backing the Uniform Civil Code while dismissing the relevance of Sharia law in December 2024.
