Over the years, Kaling channelised her desire to lose weight and become fit as a life goal at the time. However, she revealed that now all she thinks about is becoming healthy so that she gets an extra 20 years with her children. “When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes,” she said, before adding, “I had it on both sides of my family, and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me, and that’s my goal,” during a conversation with Bustle. The realisation about her body hit her when she thought about her path of parenthood and the relationships in her life. “Do I wake up every day being like, ‘I look amazing and I’m so gorgeous’? No, unsurprisingly, but I truly feel so healthy,” she continued, mentioning that she may write about her weight loss journey in the future.

During the interview with the outlet, Kaling expressed that she gets why some fans are frustrated with her.
