When a mother is well-nourished, she’s far more likely to experience a healthy pregnancy, give birth to a strong baby, and set that child on a trajectory for a thriving life

A mother’s health is one of the most foundational pillars of public well-being. It profoundly shapes the health, growth, and future potential of generations to come. When a mother is well-nourished, she’s far more likely to experience a healthy pregnancy, give birth to a strong baby, and set that child on a trajectory for a thriving life. Similarly, if a mother lacks adequate, quality nutrition, it can tragically initiate a cycle of poor health and missed opportunities that echoes through families for decades. Dr Tanushree Gupta, MS(Obst & Gyn), Udyan Hospital, Lucknow shares all you need to know:

Being pregnant places immense demands on a woman’s body. She’s not only supporting her own physiological changes but also meticulously building a new human being, requiring a constant supply of nutrients. This includes macronutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, alongside vital micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, and zinc. If these essential nutrients are missing, it can lead to complications for the mother and hinder the baby’s optimal growth and development.

The Silent Crisis: Widespread Nutrient Deficiencies

The scale of this problem is truly significant. Many women begin their pregnancies already facing a nutrient deficit; for instance, 59.1% of teenage girls in India suffer from anaemia, and three out of four Indian women don’t get enough iron from their diet. Additionally, a recent study found nearly 50% of women surveyed had low vitamin B12 levels. Vitamin D deficiency is also alarmingly common, affecting 76% of the Indian population in 2023, with the highest rates in women under 25 (84%). This widespread deficit is profoundly concerning given Vitamin D’s indispensable role in facilitating calcium absorption and maintaining skeletal integrity. Without adequate Vitamin D, the body struggles to utilize calcium, directly impacting maternal bone health and foetal skeletal development.

Calcium deficiency poses an equally critical threat. The rapidly developing foetus places substantial demands on maternal calcium reserves. If dietary intake is inadequate, the mother’s own bone density can be compromised, elevating her long-term risk of osteoporosis. These nutrient shortages, if not addressed, can deeply affect pregnancy outcomes and a child’s long-term health.

The Impact of Poor Nutrition

The consequences of poor maternal nutrition are serious and multifaceted. Not getting enough nutrients raises a mother’s risk of complications like severe anaemia, gestational hypertension, and postpartum haemorrhage. For the baby, it can lead to being born too small, too early, having slower brain development, and being more susceptible to long-term illnesses. This intergenerational impact means that a mother’s nutrition affects far more than just her pregnancy; it shapes the health trajectory of her child and potentially future generations.

A Multi-pronged Approach: Diet, Education, and Supplements

Fixing these widespread problems requires a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach. Ensuring diets are varied and nutrient-dense, improving access to healthy, affordable foods, and providing clear, actionable education about good nutrition are all vital steps. However, given the sheer prevalence of nutrient deficiencies, targeted supplements play an incredibly important role. While iron and folic acid supplements have long been a basic part of pregnancy care, growing evidence increasingly shows that adding a broader range of micronutrient supplements, including Vitamin D and Calcium, provides even greater benefits.

Investing in Mothers, Investing in Our Future

When mothers receive adequate, quality nutrition, the benefits ripple outwards across society. Healthy pregnancies lead to healthier babies, who are then more likely to grow, develop fully, and reach their full potential. Over time, this naturally leads to stronger, more productive communities and nations.

Ensuring mothers receive good nutrition is not just a health goal; it’s a fundamental investment in our collective future. Well-nourished mothers are the very foundation for healthier generations. They help break the cycle of poor health and enable children to thrive, learn, and truly flourish. Making sure every woman has access to the nutrition she needs before, during, and after pregnancy is not merely a medical recommendation, it’s a societal imperative.
