In a chilling reminder of the persistent threats to women’s safety in the national capital, a woman was allegedly gang-raped inside a private sleeper bus in Delhi. The incident, which reportedly took place on May 12, has once again sparked outrage over the security of women in public and semi-public transport spaces. According to the police, the victim is a married woman and a mother of three. In her complaint, she alleged that while she was near the vehicle, the bus driver and the conductor forcibly pulled her inside the sleeper coach. Once the doors were shut, the duo took turns sexually assaulting her. Following the trauma, the victim approached the local police to report the heinous crime. Authorities acted swiftly, registering an FIR based on her statement. The woman was immediately taken for a mandatory medical examination, which confirmed the assault. The Delhi Police have confirmed the arrest of both the primary suspects—the bus driver and the conductor. The private sleeper bus used in the commission of the crime has been seized and moved to the police station for a detailed forensic examination. Forensic teams are currently scouring the vehicle for biological evidence and fingerprints to build a water-tight case against the accused. While the suspects are currently under interrogation, the police are also investigating the bus’s permit and whether there were any security lapses or CCTV footage available from the vicinity. This incident has raised serious questions about the regulation of private bus operators and the safety protocols for passengers and pedestrians in the city late at night.
