Rahul Dev recalls insensitive behaviour of media during brother Mukul Dev’s funeral: ‘People came just to take photographs’

Rahul Dev recently opened up about the difficult time following the death of his brother, actor Mukul Dev, and called out the insensitive behaviour of some sections of the media during the funeral proceedings.Mukul Dev passed away on May 23, 2025, following a brief illness and a period in the ICU. He was 54. The actor was cremated a day later at the Lodhi Crematorium in New Delhi, where Rahul Dev performed the last rites in an emotional ceremony attended by close family members and friends from the industry.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Rahul Dev said he was disturbed by the way personal grief was being covered during his brother’s final journey.

‘I had not invited anybody there’

Talking about the funeral, Rahul shared, “Yes, definitely. I have many good friends in the media, so this is not against everyone. But what happened during my brother’s funeral was very strange.”The actor revealed that nobody from the media had been invited personally and that the family was simply trying to manage the situation amid grief.“We had to reach the crematorium from Max Hospital within an hour, and everything was happening very fast,” he said. Rahul further explained that he only shared an Instagram story so relatives and close people could be informed in time.“I simply put up an Instagram story because sometimes relatives later complain that they were not informed. But after that, it became madness,” he added.

‘Someone’s brother has passed away and people came to take photographs’

Expressing disappointment over the behaviour he witnessed during the funeral, Rahul said he found it upsetting that people arrived only to click pictures during such a personal and painful moment.“I find it very strange that someone’s brother has passed away and people come there just to take photographs,” he shared.The actor also said he does not regret asking people to stop filming and covering the ceremony.“I don’t feel ashamed about how I reacted at that moment. I did what felt right to me emotionally and sensibly,” Rahul said.“The shame should be on the people who are covering such moments insensitively. That reflects their depth, not mine,” he concluded.Mukul Dev was known for his work across Hindi, Punjabi, and regional cinema, along with several television appearances over the years. He is survived by his daughter Sia Dev and his siblings, including Rahul Dev.
