‘Don’t let him die’: Teacher accused of murdering baby begged medics to save son, UK court hears

The Preston Crown Court heard that the teacher charged for the murder and abuse of his 13-month-old adopted son called out for help from medical experts to save his child when he was rushed to the Blackpool Victoria Hospital while unconscious on Tuesday. The prosecution team revealed that Jamie Varley, aged 37, brought Preston Davey to the Blackpool Victoria Hospital after the child had lost consciousness.According to media publications like BBC News and The Guardian, there are reports of testimony presented to the jury in Preston Crown Court. These news reports give information about the prosecution team’s case and how events have transpired at the hospital.According to prosecutors, Preston faced severe mistreatment during the period when he stayed with Jamie Varley and his companion, John McGowan-Fazakerley, who is aged 32. Reports show that the young boy had undergone frequent beatings and sexual assaults by Varley in addition to indecent image production. Post-mortem results revealed nearly 40 injuries all over the body of the deceased. The medical professionals were able to relate what happened immediately following Preston’s admission into the hospital. According to Dr Wendy Aubrey, who was a senior anaesthetist, Preston did not seem to have any water in his lungs, which contradicted Varley’s version of events. Varley said that he left the baby alone in the bath for only a few minutes, coming back to find that Preston was in trouble. According to Dr Aubrey, the clinical expectation under those conditions would be water inhalation.According to Dr Anthony Kearns, who is an accident and emergency consultant, the state of the child’s body was described when resuscitation was attempted. Preston’s body had no evidence of moisture on it, and his nappy was still intact. The witness testimony was able to give insight into the actions of both the accused in the event. According to Dr Aubrey, there was one parent who stood quietly whilst another behaved in a very agitated and extremely emotional way. Dr Aubrey informed the court that the latter parent had been shouting appeals for the preservation of the child’s life and saying an incriminating statement in the heat of the moment. In addition, paramedic Simon Crabb described the state of mind of Varley as hysterical throughout the journey to the hospital, while McGowan-Fazakerley was less hysterical. The prosecution is accusing Varley of several counts, which include the offences of murder, sexual assault, cruelty to children, grievous bodily harm, and indecent image of a child. On the other hand, the charges against McGowan-Fazakerley include child cruelty and sexual assault. These charges are being contested by the defendants in court. In the midst of the proceedings, the court took a recess on Tuesday and is set to reconvene on Wednesday morning as the evidence continues. Due to the serious nature of the charges, the case has generated a lot of public interest as well as highlighting the importance of safeguarding responsibilities within adoptive care arrangements.
