Xenophanes of Colophon (c. 570 – c. 478 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher, poet, and social critic. Born in Ionia (modern-day Turkey), he spent most of his long life wandering across the Greek world as a traveling poet after his hometown was conquered by the Persians.Unlike many thinkers of his time who focused purely on physical science, trying to determine whether the world was made of water, air, or fire, Xenophanes was fascinated by human nature, culture, and religious belief. He was one of the earliest Western thinkers to criticize popular religion, social norms, and the blind acceptance of tradition.“If horses or oxen or lions had hands and could draw with their hands and accomplish such works as men do, horses would draw the forms of the gods like horses, and oxen like oxen, and they would make their bodies such as the shape which they each have,” he said, unveiling a tenet of human psychology so ahead of its time. He explained that everyone imagines everything like them.
World of Homer and Hesiod
For the average Greek, religion came straight from the epic poems of Homer (The Iliad and The Odyssey) and Hesiod (Theogony). These stories depicted gods like Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, and Ares. But these gods didn’t just look like tall, attractive humans; they also acted like them. They threw tantrums, cheated on their spouses, lied, fought out of jealousy, and held petty grudges. Xenophanes found this absurd. He argued that Homer and Hesiod had attributed to the gods “everything that is a shame and a reproach among men: stealing, committing adultery, and deceiving each other.”This led Xenophanes to ask a deeper question: Where do our ideas of the divine actually come from? Are we discovering the truth, or are we just making things up in our own image?
What does Xenophanes’s famous quote teach us?
Xenophanes realized that humans are inherently ego-driven. We assume that we are the standard for the universe. Because we have two arms, two legs, and walk upright, we assume God or the divine must look like a glorified version of us.By bringing horses, oxen, and lions into the equation, Xenophanes strips away human arrogance. He shows that our mental picture of God isn’t based on divine revelation; it’s based on self-love. If a horse thinks a horse is the peak of physical creation, of course its god would have hooves and a mane.Just after the horse-and-oxen passage, Xenophanes made another famous observation: “The Ethiopians say that their gods are snub-nosed and black; the Thracians that theirs are blue-eyed and red-haired.”He was pointing out that every culture paints God to look like its own people. A northern European tribe sees a fair-skinned god; an African culture sees a dark-skinned god. Xenophanes realized that religion is often just a mirror reflecting the culture that created it.Xenophanes wasn’t an atheist. He didn’t use this argument to say God doesn’t exist. Instead, he was arguing for humility. He believed that there is a divine reality, but that human beings are too limited to see it clearly. When we try to picture God, we can’t help but use our limited human experience as a template. By making God look and act like us, we reduce something vast and ultimate into something small, familiar, and comfortable.
A lesson on human psychology
While Xenophanes’ quote was about God, what he revealed is applicable everywhere. We constantly judge other people, animals, and nature through the narrow lens of human experience. Xenophanes was reminding us that the world does not revolve around human beings.
