As devotees continue to celebrate the Ganesh Chaturthi festival with religious fervour across the country, the Pune Police on Thursday issued an order banning the filming and circulation of images or videos of Ganpati idol immersions from September 4 to September 15.

The order was issued in an attempt to maintain communal harmony and prevent potential disturbances during the festival.

The directive comes ahead of the main immersion day on Saturday, when thousands of devotees are expected to take part in Ganesh Visarjan across the city.

The order has been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) — the new criminal procedure code that replaced the CrPC.

Authorities warned that violators will face legal action under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which governs criminal offences in India.

“The filming and sharing visuals of Ganpati idols immersed in natural water bodies or artificial tanks could hurt religious sentiments and disturb public peace. Violators will be prosecuted under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” the order said.

Ganesh Chaturthi, one of India’s most cherished festivals, began on August 27, this year. The celebrations last ten days, concluding on September 6 with Ganesh Visarjan, also called Anant Chaturdashi. On this day, devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha by immersing his idol in water, either at large public water bodies or at home, following traditional rituals.

For many families, the Visarjan is a time of devotion, celebration, and gratitude. While some follow family traditions and perform Visarjan on the third, fifth, or seventh day, most do it on the final day of the festival. The rituals help devotees express thanks to Lord Ganesha for the blessings received during the festival.
