‘Coach Kash’ was more like a bro: Friend speaks up about FBI director amid raging controversy

'Coach Kash' was more like a bro: Friend speaks up about FBI director amid raging controversy

An old friend recollected how Kash Patel agreed to become the hockey coach for his son’s team.

At a time, FBI director Kash Patel is embroiled in several controversies mostly surrounding his alleged erratic behavior, people from his past, those who know Patel as ‘Coach Kash’ have spoken up about how passionate he is about hockey. One Clark Mowrey told CNN how a decade ago he saw Kash Patel working out at a gym in DC wearing a Hartford Whalers shirt. Mowrey said he started a conversation with Kash and found out that he was an employee at the DOJ but very enthusiastic about hockey.Mowrey said he asked Patel whether he would coach his son’s team. It was never paid and Patel was very busy at that time but he never missed any practice and any game and he often came at the rink wearing his work suit, Mowrey said. “The kids kind of fell in love with him, and he was always there and always available,” Mowrey said adding that his son still texts Patel monthly and other kids — who are now young men in their 20s– discuss about Coach Kash.“They get filtered down versions of news and stuff and they’re like, ‘Is Kash doing okay? Because we heard this or we saw this person saying these things about him,’” Mowrey said. “Other than the ugly stuff that’s out there, the kids know that his core values and his moral fibers are always on point.” Patel left the Justice Department in 2017 and began working as an aide for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, led by then-Republican Rep. Devin Nunes. That’s also when he took on even more hockey coaching responsibility, volunteering as an assistant coach for a youth recreational team made up of students at Woodrow Wilson High School, now called Jackson-Reed, in Northwest Washington. One former player told CNN that Kash was more like a bro and at that time they were not aware how close he was to Donald Trump. Then Kash Patel started showing up on Fox News and got his own segment and the kids were surprised as they rarely talked about anything outside of hockey.

3 latest controversies of Kash Patel

While Patel’s stint as the FBI director has been mired in controversies one after another, the three latest ones are:

  1. The Atlantic called Patel alcoholic to such an extent that he is drunk on the job. Patel has filed a $250 million lawsuit against Atlantic.
  2. Patel got a jolt from a federal judge in Texas who dismissed Patel’s defamation lawsuit against Frank Figliuzzi who on the air remarks that Patel spent more time at nightclubs. The court said the comment was not literal.
  3. A report claimed that FBI looked for a journalist who reported that Kash Patel’s girlfriend singer Alexis Wilkins was getting 24X7 protection. Patel said this never happened but the “same reporter delivered a baseless story which caused a direct threat-of-life to my girlfriend.”
