Three people were killed and five others injured in Indonesia after protesters set fire to a regional parliament building in Makassar, in unrest that has emerged as the first major test for President Prabowo Subianto’s government.

The blaze broke out in South Sulawesi’s provincial capital after crowds stormed the building. The National Disaster Management Agency said the victims died in the fire while two of the injured were hurt after jumping from the burning structure to escape. Indonesia’s state-run Antara news agency reported that several of the dead had been trapped inside as the flames spread.

Protests Sparked By Lawmakers’ Pay

The unrest began earlier in the week in Jakarta, where demonstrators took to the streets over lawmakers’ allowances. Tensions escalated sharply on Friday when a police armoured vehicle struck and killed a motorcycle taxi driver during protests in the capital.

President Prabowo, who took office last October, visited the victim’s family late on Friday. He offered condolences to the parents and promised to oversee an investigation into the incident.

Widening Unrest Across Cities

Local media reported isolated looting in Jakarta, with damage to transport facilities in the city. Protests also spread to Bandung and Yogyakarta, underscoring the breadth of discontent.

Jakarta’s mass rapid transit operator said trains bypassed one station on Saturday near the protest site, while Transjakarta buses temporarily suspended services in the area.
