Carey Mulligan talks about ‘Beef’ season 2: 'They can’t stand us, and we can’t stand them'

Carey Mulligan talks about ‘Beef’ season 2 themes

Carey Mulligan, while speaking to the BBC about her latest series ‘Beef’ season 2, said that the age difference between the two main couples creates a sense of “mutual disdain,” adding that this gap plays a major role in the story. She said, “They can’t stand us, and we can’t stand them. Everything they do is annoying, particularly after the inciting incident of the whole show. We have a common enemy in them, and that’s the way we stay together.”She further explained that the central couple’s strained relationship is partly held together by their shared irritation toward the Gen Z couple, who seem to have everything going for them. She added, “Their relationship is really hanging by a thread, and actually it’s their mutual disdain of this Gen Z couple, and all the things about them that are annoying, that binds us.” Oscar Isaac also spoke about the show, saying, “That really rubs us the wrong way. There’s also a cynicism we have about their view of love — all these plans and things they seem so certain about, when they haven’t experienced any of the real pitfalls of being in a relationship.” Mulligan further revealed that she and Isaac would often tease their younger co-stars about being the “Gen Z” couple in the series. She said, “We were always trying to find ways to be more annoyed by them. We called them ‘the kids’, which seems unfair because I think Charles is 33.”
