Miranda Priestly returns: Streep reflects on time and family

76-year-old Meryl Streep shares life lesson as a working grandmother ahead of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’: ‘You can’t get anything back'

At 76, Meryl Streep is still a powerhouse in Hollywood. But if you look past the awards and the famous roles, you find someone who’s gotten pretty clear about what actually matters to her now. With everyone buzzing about ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, Streep isn’t just making headlines because she’s stepping back into those iconic Miranda Priestly heels. She’s also opening up about her life, her work, her family, and what she’s learned along the way.

The mindset that guides Meryl Streep

In a joint Vogue interview with Anna Wintour, she said one thing keeps her grounded, both as an actor and as a grandmother: “You can’t get anything back.”For Streep, time is everything. The older she gets, the more she feels it slipping through her fingers, especially when she’s with her grandkids. She talked about this in the interview, saying she tries to grab every second she can with her family, even with a schedule that would exhaust most people. She quoted, “It’s just grabbing seconds, just grabbing everything you can of them, with the knowledge of how completely fleeting it all is and how rapidly time goes,” she told Greta Gerwig. “This is what my mother said to me, and I said, ‘Yeah, yeah.’ It’s the longest, shortest time. And you can’t get anything back. So take as much as you can… I find it divine.”For the unversed, Streep has six grandchildren, all between the ages of 1 and 6. “I can’t even talk about how much it means to me that my kids give me as much time as they do with their kids. The only thing is that they’re on two coasts, so I’m in the airplane a lot,” she laughed. That same philosophy shapes how she works, even now. She doesn’t slow down. She still takes on tough roles, travels, and keeps her creative energy up. But she’s more aware of every moment, more deliberate. She knows what’s worth her time. She quoted Tom Stoppard, the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter who once was her partner: “You’ve got to shift your weight.” Acting is unpredictable. You’re always on shifting ground. Fame comes and goes in a second. Streep said, “That takes time, and you can’t do it at home by yourself. It’s not like writing or composing. I don’t think: I love this job. I’m going to have this job for a long time. I think: This is the world. The unstable world. Everything changes and it’s about learning to sort of be prepared for that.”She’s talked about this before, too. Back in 2008, she said balancing work and family is a constant process. “Motherhood, marriage, it’s a balancing act. Especially when you have a job you find rewarding. It’s a challenge, but the best kind of challenge.”

Meryl Streep: Away from the limelight

Streep’s always been private, but lately she’s let people see her as a grandmother. And honestly, it’s clear that the role means the world to her. She has six grandkids, thanks to her children Henry Wolfe, Mamie Gummer, and Grace Gummer. She calls it “divine,” and even jokes that she’s an “over-involved” grandmother. However, she admits that it’s not always easy. But she’s willing to do it, though. In these moments, she’s not the powerhouse on screen or an Oscar legend. She’s just a grandmother, trying to hang on to the time she has.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’: Return of Miranda Priestly

Now, nearly two decades after the original film, Streep is reprising her role in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, and this time, the story reportedly follows Miranda Priestly as she navigates the decline of traditional print media and the challenges of a rapidly evolving fashion industry. The sequel, scheduled to hit theatres on May 1, 2026, brings back key cast members including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
