The head of the European Union’s executive commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has expressed her outrage at Russia’s deadliest onslaught on Kyiv since July, an attack that caused significant damage to the EU’s own delegation office in the Ukrainian capital. The bombardment, which included a mix of missiles and drones, marked a renewed and intense phase of Moscow’s aggression against civilian targets.

The strikes, which occurred overnight, destroyed a five-story residential building and resulted in numerous casualties. While the attack’s primary victims were civilians, its collateral damage carried immense symbolic weight. The EU mission building, located in a central district of the city, was severely damaged, as was the nearby British Council.

According to EU officials, two missiles landed within 50 metres of the delegation building within 20 seconds, and the EU ambassador to Ukraine confirmed the structure had been “severely damaged by the shock wave”.

Although no EU staff members were physically harmed, the attack was seen by Brussels as a deliberate act of intimidation. Von der Leyen called it a “grim reminder of what is at stake” and a sign that the “Kremlin will stop at nothing to terrorize Ukraine… and even target the European Union”.

The strike on a diplomatic mission, a violation of international law, was seen as a clear signal from Moscow, prompting the EU to summon the Russian envoy in Brussels in protest.

The damage to the EU’s physical representation in Kyiv underscores the bloc’s deep commitment to Ukraine. In the face of this provocation, the EU leadership has vowed to intensify its support for Ukraine, with von der Leyen announcing that a new, 19th package of “hard-biting sanctions” will soon be unveiled.
