US-Israel launches fresh strikes on Kharg island — why this oil hub is vital for Iran

Kharg island

US-Israel targeted Kharg Island in a fresh wave of attacks on Tuesday, striking Iran’s key oil export hub as the conflict intensifies. Multiple explosions were reported on the island, with US officials indicating that military targets were hit, even as the strikes came just hours ahead of a deadline set by Donald Trump for Tehran to meet his demands or face broader action. The development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel, with critical infrastructure increasingly coming under direct threat. Several key bridges were also targeted in the latest strikes.

Why Kharg Island matters

Located in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is the backbone of Iran’s oil export system, handling nearly 90 per cent of the country’s crude shipments. Oil is transported from mainland fields through pipelines and stored in large tank farms before being loaded onto very large tankers at the island’s deep-water jetties, an advantage Iran’s otherwise shallow coastline does not offer.

Despite its small size, the island has been heavily industrialised, with storage capacity running into tens of millions of barrels and infrastructure capable of servicing multiple supertankers simultaneously. This makes Kharg the central node of Iran’s oil logistics network. The island’s role makes it a crucial economic lifeline for Tehran, funding a significant portion of the state’s revenues. Any disruption to operations here can sharply hit Iran’s export capacity and its ability to sustain prolonged conflict. Kharg’s strategic importance is not restricted to Iran. Situated close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints through which a substantial share of global crude passes, it sits at the centre of a highly sensitive energy corridor. Disruptions to exports from hubs like Kharg can quickly ripple through global energy markets, affecting supply stability and prices.Beyond energy, the island also serves as a key military outpost, with air defences, radar systems and naval facilities used to monitor and secure shipping lanes in the northern Gulf.
