India’s Census 2027 began on Wednesday, making it the country’s first-ever digital census with a self-enumeration facility. Around 55,000 households used this option on day one, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah. The exercise is currently running in eight states and union territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, and select areas of Delhi.
The self-enumeration portal is available in 16 regional languages, giving citizens the flexibility to fill in their details before an enumerator visits their home.
How To Complete Self-Enumeration Online For Census 2027
The process is straightforward. Here is how to do it, step by step:
- Login: Visit the self-enumeration portal and log in using your mobile number.
- Identify your location: Use the map tool on the portal to mark your exact location.
- Fill in your details: Complete the household information and census schedule on the portal.
- Submit: Once done, submit the information online.
- Get your Self-Enumeration ID: After submission, the system generates a unique ID for your household.
- Share the ID with the enumerator: When a census enumerator visits your home during the door-to-door phase, provide them with this ID.
- Confirmation: The enumerator will verify the data, and it will be officially included in the Census.
It is important to note that self-enumeration is an additional facility. Enumerators will still carry out door-to-door visits across all allocated houselisting blocks, just as in previous censuses.

- Punjab: April 30-May 14, 2026
- Delhi (MCD), Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Jharkhand: May 1-15, 2026

Census 2027’s second phase is scheduled for February next year, when population count and details on caste, demographic, socio-economic, and cultural information will be collected from every household in the country.
