IPL 2026: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Nuwan Thushara has taken a drastic step by filing a court case against the top officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The 30 year old fast bowler is fighting for his right to play in IPL 2026 after being denied a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the national board.
According to reports from NewsWire, Thushara has also informed the board that he does not wish to renew his central contract and plans to move away from international cricket to focus on T20 leagues.
Fitness Standards vs IPL Dreams
The legal battle began after SLC refused to grant Thushara the necessary paperwork to join the RCB squad in India. The board claimed that the pacer failed to meet the prescribed fitness standards required for international and franchise duty.
However, Thushara has argued in court that his fitness levels have remained consistent throughout his career. He pointed out that these same levels never stopped him from getting an NOC in the past. He believes the sudden decision to block his participation is unjustified and has named SLC President Shammi Silva and CEO Ashley de Silva as defendants in the case.
Financial Loss and Retirement Plans
Thushara was bought by RCB for 1.6 Crore INR in 2025 and was part of the squad that lifted the trophy last season. In his petition, the bowler stated that missing the 2026 season would result in a massive financial and professional loss.
His current contract with SLC expired on March 31. By choosing not to renew it, Thushara is effectively signaling the end of his career with the Sri Lankan national team. He wants the Colombo District Court to direct the board to allow him to join his IPL franchise immediately.
What This Means for RCB
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already started their IPL 2026 campaign with a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the team is in good form, the absence of a “slingshot” bowler like Thushara could affect their depth in the death overs.
The court has fixed a hearing for April 9. Until then, Thushara remains in a state of limbo, waiting to see if he can fly to India or if his IPL season is over before it even began.
