Russia-Ukraine War: At least 12 people, including three children, have been killed and dozens wounded in the most deadly Russian airstrikes on Kyiv in several weeks, Ukrainian officials say. Missiles and drones struck the capital in the early hours of Wednesday, with blasts reported at more than 20 locations across the city. A five-storey residential building in eastern Kyiv was partly destroyed, where rescuers pulled three people alive from the rubble.

Among the dead were a two-year-old child, a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration. He said at least 45 people had been injured, with rescue efforts continuing. Interior minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that more people may still be trapped beneath debris.

‘Russia Chooses Ballistics’

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, saying they showed Moscow had no interest in ending the war through diplomacy. He said, “These Russian missiles and attack drones today are a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy. Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table.”

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, described the barrage as a “massive attack on the capital” and urged residents to remain in shelters. Ukrainian officials said ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as Iranian-made Shahed drones, were used in the assault.

Resumed Onslaught

The bombardment came after several weeks of relative calm in August, during which US President Donald Trump met Vladimir Putin in Alaska in a failed attempt to broker peace. The overnight assault signalled what Kyiv said was Russia’s return to its campaign of urban terror.

Zelenskyy called for tougher international sanctions against Moscow, urging even China- a Russian ally- to respond.

“We expect a reaction from China to what is going on. China has repeatedly called for not expanding the war and for a ceasefire,” he said.
