On the eve of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to China, his statement that “the oceans hold the key to our future” resonated at the World Seafood Shanghai Exhibition 2025. This marks India’s inaugural participation at the Shanghai World Marine Expo, one of the largest events of its kind. The India Pavilion attracted significant interest in the region, promoting ‘Make in India, Made for the World’ value-added seafood exports. This maiden participation aims to expand and deepen India’s marine food and value-added export footprint in China.

The Indian Pavilion showcased India’s Maritime Economy Vision, emphasising Blue Growth, Resilience, and Global Connectivity. Pratik Mathur, the Consulate General of India in Shanghai, collaborated with the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) to inaugurate India’s participation. The delegation, led by Shri DV Swamy, IAS, Chairman MPEDA, included over 30 leading Indian seafood exporters, highlighting the diversity, quality, and sustainability of India’s marine products.

He invited Chinese partners to explore technology collaboration in areas like smart aquaculture, cold-chain, and digital supply chain systems, with a goal of increasing seafood exports from US $8 billion to $12–15 billion in the coming years.

Jiang Weimin, Deputy Secretary-General, Shanghai Fisheries Trade Association (SFTA), highlighted Shanghai’s role as a global seafood hub and expressed China’s openness to stronger maritime and trade linkages with India. Prof Liao Zefang from Shanghai Ocean University delivered a keynote presentation on China’s maritime sector and aquaculture modernisation.

A special tasting session of Indian seafood delicacies and a B2B Buyer-Seller Meet further strengthened business connections between India and China in the marine products sector. With the US raising tariffs to 50 per cent, the new China route is expected to significantly boost the Fisheries Industry and exporters in India in the coming days.
