A professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in Maryland, after authorities said an argument inside a moving car ended with a passenger being shot and his body later found in a residential yard.

Shooting inside car and body found hours later

Dayton Webber, 27, was driving a car in La Plata on the night of March 22 when he allegedly shot the front-seat passenger, Bradrick Michael Wells, during an argument, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. In a detailed statement, authorities said: “On March 22 at 10:25 p.m., officers with the La Plata Police Department were flagged down by two people near the area of La Plata Road and Radio Station Road in La Plata.” A preliminary investigation found the witnesses had been sitting in the back seat when “the driver, Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata, shot and killed the front seat passenger during an argument.” After the shooting, Webber pulled over near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive and asked the passengers to help remove the victim from the vehicle.

“However, the witnesses refused, got out of the car, and left the scene,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that Webber then drove off with the victim still inside the car. Nearly two hours later, a resident in the 10000 block of Newport Church Road in Charlotte Hall called 911 to report a body in a yard. Officers responding to the scene found Wells, 27, of Waldorf, who was pronounced dead at the scene. “All occupants of the car are known to each other,” authorities said.

Arrest in Virginia after hospital visit

Following the discovery of the body, detectives obtained a warrant for Webber’s arrest on murder allegations. His vehicle was later tracked to Charlottesville, where he was located at a hospital “seeking treatment for a medical issue”. Authorities said: “Upon being released from the hospital, Webber was arrested by officers with the Albemarle County Police Department and was charged as a fugitive from justice.” Police added that an officer had reviewed security footage from a nearby gas station, recognised the suspect and located him in the area. He was taken into custody without incident and is now awaiting extradition back to Maryland. Webber is expected to face first-degree murder, second-degree murder and related charges. The investigation remains ongoing.

League response and background

Webber is a competitor in the American Cornhole League, which described the case as “an extremely serious matter.” “Our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells,” the league said in a statement, adding that it would not comment further while the case remains active. Webber, who lost all four limbs as an infant due to a severe streptococcus pneumonia blood infection, had built a profile in the sport and was previously described by the league as “unstoppable.” In a 2023 essay, he said doctors had given him a 3% chance of survival after the infection. His YouTube channel, which features videos titled “No hands no feet shooting,” shows him firing firearms, and documents aspects of his life and sporting career.

Case remains active

Authorities have asked anyone with further information to contact investigators, while Webber remains in custody pending extradition. No defence statements have yet been issued, and public defenders associated with earlier cases involving Webber did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case is continuing as investigators piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Go to Source
