Spotlight on Ranveer’s Sher-e-Baloch banger: ‘Didi’ from Algerian maestro Khaled. A 1992 release that topped charts as a bonafide chartbuster, it’s been reworked, revived, and localized—including in Hindi—decades ahead of ‘Dhurandhar 2’. Dubbed Cheb Khaled, he weaves a tale of profound intimacy in this Arabic raï hit. Translation snippet: “I’m burning in the fire of love, but you’re not. I will not make you away from me so I don’t cry later (always be close). But I just have a bad luck and destiny. Take take (Didi Didi), Take take the beautiful girl away. Take take, take take the beautiful girl away.” Arabic for ‘didi’? Straight-up ‘take.’
Ranveer Singh’s anthem is currently ruling the global charts
‘Didi’ dominated charts across France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia upon its release. It also kicked off the 2010 FIFA World Cup as one of the opening tracks.As Mid-Day reported earlier, Ranveer lands a ‘FA9LA-esque’ banger in ‘Dhurandhar 2’. His sequence wrapped a single day before Akshaye Khanna’s ‘FA9LA’ shoot in rugged Ladakh. After Akshaye’s character Rehman Dakait is killed in Dhurandhar, the Sher-e-Baloch title is given to Ranveer’s Hamza in the sequel. The song is a celebration of his ascension. Aditya shot Ranveer’s number on the same set in Ladakh. He decided to shoot the two songs back-to-back because the set was already standing, and given the challenging climatic conditions, it didn’t make sense to return to Ladakh later just for one song.

An early remix came from Moroccan-Belgian artist Brahim in 2005, who layered in English lyrics. In 2007, German duo Milk & Honey dropped a full-English rendition with fresh lyrics and a revamped arrangement. The track has since seen covers in languages including Greek, Spanish, Russian, Albanian, Turkish, Persian, Urdu, Serbian, and German.

India’s cinema has embraced the song repeatedly. It gained traction through unauthorized copies, including the hit Hindi track “Ladki Ladki” from the 1993 Bollywood film ‘Shreemaan Aashique’. Bappi Lahiri and Kavita Krishnamurthy loosely sampled it in “Suno Suno Meri Rani Ji” from the 1994 movie ‘Brahma’.
