The family of a 16-year-old boy, who took his own life after months of suicidal chats with ChatGPT in California, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its chief executive, Sam Altman, blaming them for his death and claiming that the artificial intelligence chatbot has features that are “intentionally” designed to encourage mental dependence, according to a report.

The boy was identified as Adam Raine, who took the extreme step in April 2025 after months of private conversations with ChatGPT, his parents – Maria and Matt Raine – alleged.

They believe that ChatGPT is to blame for their son’s move, and they filed a lawsuit against the tech giant this week, in the first known case to be brought against OpenAI for wrongful death, The New York Times reported.

“This tragedy was not a glitch or an unforeseen edge case — it was the predictable result of deliberate design choices,” the complaint, filed on Tuesday in California state court in San Francisco, said.

“OpenAI launched its latest model (‘GPT-4o’) with features intentionally designed to foster psychological dependency,” they alleged in the complaint.
