A major landslide disrupted road connectivity between Tawang and Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district on Monday, damaging vehicles and blocking approximately 120 meters of the strategically important road that connects to border areas. The incident occurred in the Sapper Camp area of Dirang subdivision, while another landslide simultaneously affected NH-2 between Kohima and Wokha town in Nagaland, causing traffic disruptions across the northeastern region. The landslide in Arunachal Pradesh triggered boulders to roll down the hills, creating panic among commuters who were forced to reverse their vehicles. A video of the incident, circulated on social media, captured the chaos as people frantically honked their horns while attempting to escape the falling debris. The affected road serves as a crucial link for both civilian and military movement to the border areas of Tawang district. Local officials indicate that traffic may resume by Tuesday, as efforts to clear the blockage continue. In Nagaland, the landslide on NH-2 has completely blocked vehicular movement on the busy route connecting several districts to the state capital. The highway serves as a vital link between Kohima and multiple areas, including Tseminyu, Wokha, Pughoboto subdivision under Zunheboto, and Mokokchung. The India Meteorological Department has issued weather warnings for Arunachal Pradesh, forecasting widespread rainfall and thunderstorms until August 28. Specific alerts have been issued for Anini and Yingkiong, which are under a yellow alert with expectations of overcast skies and light rainfall not exceeding 5 mm per hour. The Nagaland incident, triggered by continuous spells of heavy rain, has left numerous passenger and commercial vehicles stranded on both sides of the affected stretch. While no casualties have been reported, the ongoing mudslides have delayed road clearance operations.District administration, police, and public works department personnel have responded to the situation in Nagaland. Current efforts are focused on establishing alternative routes for light vehicles to maintain essential connectivity.”Traffic may resume by Tuesday,” local media quoted official sources as saying regarding the Arunachal Pradesh situation. The meteorological department’s continued warning of rainfall suggests that vigilance will be necessary in the coming days to prevent further disruptions to transportation networks in the region. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to restore normal traffic flow while ensuring public safety.
