Row over Indian student on F‑1 visa flashing gun in viral video: ‘He must be deported’

Row over Indian student on F‑1 visa flashing gun in viral video: 'He must be deported'

A viral video showing an Indian student in the United States handling a handgun has stirred a row with several social media users demanding that he be deported. The clip shows Akhilesh Chetla Ravi inside a convenience store or petrol station. In the short video, he is seen holding a handgun while radio chatter in the background mentions “shots fired”. The footage was first linked to his Snapchat account before going viral across social media platforms.Posts sharing the clip claimed that Ravi was in the United States on an F-1 student visa and had been working illegally off campus at the store shown in the video. Under US visa rules, F-1 students face strict limits on employment outside their university and are not allowed to take up unauthorised work.

The viral posts also questioned the legality of him possessing a firearm. Some users argued that the situation could involve violations of immigration and firearm regulations. Several users tagged US agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and State Department officials, while calling for an inquiry. Several posts demanded action, with some users writing that “He must be deported”. Ravi is originally from India and graduated from Hood College in Maryland in May 2025 with a degree in Management Information Systems. His name appears in the college’s official commencement programme among graduate degree recipients.According to his LinkedIn profile, Ravi has been working as a software developer at JPMorgan Chase since September 2025. The profile also lists earlier roles as a data engineer at Bayer and Capgemini, along with previous work with BYJU’S. His Instagram account, previously public under the handle @akhilesh.ch_98, was also switched to private shortly after the video went viralThe episode sparked another debate about immigration enforcement and firearm laws for non-citizens in US, particularly for students on F-1 visas.

Social media reactions:

  • He’s not legally allowed to work outside the campus I suppose.
  • Everyone who has a gun, knows that’s not how you handle a gun
  • Good to see rampant Indian fraud is going mainstream.
  • What’s the point of doing that if you know that you’ll be in big trouble?
  • Any student especially foreign, wants to indulge in any activity other than books library & education should be deported immediately
