Energy Crisis Alert: Middle East War Begins Affecting Gas Supply in India

The ongoing Middle East war is now beginning to impact energy supplies in India. A major concern has emerged regarding natural gas availability as supplies from Qatar have been disrupted. Reports indicate that production at some Qatari energy facilities has slowed after attacks, while restrictions around the crucial Strait of Hormuz have also affected shipping routes. Because of this disruption, GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) is considering reducing gas supply to certain sectors as a precautionary step. India imports a large portion of its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Qatar, which is used not only by industries but also for piped gas supplied to households. Officials say India currently has around 20–21 days of gas reserves, but if the conflict continues for a longer period, shortages could occur. As an immediate measure, supply cuts are being considered mainly for industrial consumers, while domestic household supply may be protected to avoid public disruption. Meanwhile, commercial LPG cylinder supplies to some facilities in Pune linked to Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum plants have reportedly been halted temporarily. Experts say India may quickly diversify LNG imports from countries like Australia, Russia, United States, and Canada to manage the crisis if the conflict continues.
